Empathy is often defined as the ability to understand and share the feelings and thoughts of someone else. However, to me, empathy is being there for someone when they need you most-being their shoulder to cry on, their rock, the person they can confide in. I try to show empathy and kindness as part of my daily life as well as through bigger acts of service. I am friendly and enjoy meeting new people and talking to adults and children. I am also interested in helping the homeless, those struggling with mental health and helping my community through volunteering at our neighborhood Easter Egg hunt. It inspires me that the work the Aubrey Rose Foundation does has impacted the lives of so many children, and being a part of that positive change would mean the world to me. Although her life was cut short, Aubrey made a lasting impact on the community through her bright smile, always bringing joy into other people’s lives despite her health struggles.

I have helped put together blessing bags with my church several times. These bags are for nearby children without enough food when they are not at school. Before Christmas, I prepared food packs for the homeless in my kitchen. I bought drawstring bags for personal care items like gloves, hats, and hand warmers, and brown paper bags for food. I decorated each bag. I drew a Christmas tree, wrote, ‘Merry Christmas,’ wrote a different Bible verse on each bag about strength and courage, and signed ‘God bless’ and ‘I love you!’” The best part of all was walking and driving through downtown Cincinnati to deliver the 40 bags I made. The people were so thankful and I could tell how much these bags would help them. Through this experience, I learned that, despite our different stories, we can still be a part of each other’s journey.

It has been my honor to support those struggling with mental health. It has been one of the most important parts of my life. Whether through late-night conversations, spending time together, or even just offering them a simple smile, I always aim for them to know that they are not alone. Through unconditional love and support, I have watched them grow stronger. These experiences taught me a little compassion and kindness can go a long way.

For the past three years, I’ve volunteered at an Easter Egg Hunt in my neighborhood. This hunt is for kids ages two through twelve, and the money raised from raffle prizes benefits the Susan G. Komen Foundation. I think back to when I attended when I was little and I hope to help other kids make similar joyful memories.

In the future, I am hoping to serve others even more! After Christmas, I gave 25% of my Christmas money to Child Focus, and another 25% to Children’s hospital. I believe that small actions can lead to big impacts.

The Aubrey Rose Foundation believes in compassion and kindness. That is like what I believe through my work helping the homeless, mental health, and the Easter Egg Hunt. I believe that you should treat others the way you want to be treated. I am so grateful I get the opportunity to apply for this scholarship that highlights students that believe in the same values I hold so close to heart. I would be truly privileged to be a part of this community. I want to make a lasting impact for many more generations to come!
