No More American Girl Fashion Shows

Why Did American Girl Stop Doing Fashion Shows?

For many years, American Girl Fashion Shows weren’t just an unforgettable experience for children and families—they were also a powerful way to support nonprofits across the country, including ours. With young models walking the runway in coordinating outfits with their dolls, narrators telling the stories of historic characters, and local communities gathering for a good cause, these events were pure magic.

That’s why so many supporters and families have asked: What happened? Why did American Girl stop doing the shows?

Unfortunately, we’re no longer able to host the beloved American Girl Fashion Shows that brought so much joy to our community for so many years. This was not our decision. In 2016, American Girl made the choice to retire the national fashion show program, bringing an end to a cherished tradition that supported nonprofits like ours across the country. We’re just as disappointed as you are.

A Look Back at a Beloved Tradition

Launched in the early 1990s, the American Girl Fashion Show program allowed nonprofits to host professionally produced shows using American Girl-branded scripts, music, and wardrobe. These events combined fun, education, and philanthropy—while giving young girls the opportunity to build confidence and celebrate girlhood through fashion and storytelling.

For our organization, these shows raised crucial funds that supported our mission. But beyond the dollars raised, they fostered a sense of community, joy, and empowerment for hundreds of girls and their families.

The Final Curtain: 2016

In early 2016, American Girl officially announced that it would be ending the national fashion show program. The decision came as a surprise to many nonprofits and families who had looked forward to these annual events.

Although American Girl did not offer a detailed public explanation for ending the fashion show program, it appears to have been part of a broader shift in the company’s business strategy. As retail trends evolved, the brand began focusing more on digital experiences, in-store events, and new product launches. Streamlining their programming likely meant phasing out initiatives like the traveling fashion shows in order to prioritize other forms of engagement.

Gratitude for the Memories

Although the fashion shows are no longer part of American Girl’s ongoing programming, their legacy lives on—in the girls who walked the runway, the families who attended, and the communities they helped uplift.

For us, the shows were a beautiful example of what happens when creativity, confidence, and compassion come together. We are deeply grateful to American Girl for allowing us to be part of this remarkable chapter, and to everyone who supported our events over the years.

And who knows? Maybe one day, we’ll see a new version of this beloved tradition return. Until then, we’ll keep finding new ways to celebrate girlhood, community, and raise funds for critically ill children.
