“Hey Aubie, catch the bubbles! Look at the big bubbles!”
Aubrey’s early intervention therapist suggested to the child’s grandmother that blowing bubbles might help her. And it did. Bubbles were floating when an enormous one appeared. Aubrey’s confidence grew large, and she decided one specific bubble was worth leaving the comfort of the couch.
She joyously walked on her own to reach that bubble, and when she did, it popped immediately. The spray from that bubble splashed onto Aubrey’s face, producing a big smile and sense of accomplishment. Why? This was a little girl who, between her birth and 18 months, underwent four open-heart surgeries and a heart and double-lung transplant.
That sense of accomplishment is one that her parents, siblings, grandparents and many dedicated volunteers have experienced since the death of Aubrey and the start of the Aubrey Rose Foundation 14 years ago.
That joyfulness and excitement has grown each year the foundation has been in existence. Dedicated to helping children with life-threatening medical conditions, the foundation in its first year donated $1,025 to its cause and made a vow that the more it brought in with donations, the more families it would help, and it has held true to this vow.
The year 2015 proved to be pivotal for this no-employee, all-volunteer foundation, as it was able to give away its one-millionth dollar. The recipient was assisted with a special bathtub unit. Prior to that, the Aubrey Rose Foundation funded medical dogs, chemotherapy treatments and special gloves for a wheelchair-bound child, among a range of other purchases, all the while putting smiles on the faces of many children and their families. This is its mission: The Aubrey Rose Foundation’s goal is to help families smile and love life, all while caring for their special children and their siblings.
The foundation’s origin story is one that is unfortunately faced by far too many families. Those who have medically fragile children experience stressful situations every day; add the financial strain on top of everything else and it can be devastating. For this reason the foundation, while helping children who have life-threatening medical conditions, does not limit that help to children with only one type of disease. It helps with any kind of life-threatening medical condition.
This distinction shines bright in the eyes of families needing support.
The foundation likes to believe that Aubrey sees each of its gifts to a child as a new, beautiful bubble floating through the air, bringing smiles and renewed happiness while building fond memories in a family’s most trying time.
