Hello Everyone,

This month we had our 8th anniversary of the Aubrey Rose Foundation. It’s hard to believe and somewhat bittersweet. We started the Foundation on February 10, 2001, which was three months to the date of Aubrey’s death. Starting this Foundation gave us a focus to get up everyday and to live. We know that Aubrey would want us to live and to thrive and that’s exactly what we’re doing with the Foundation.

This has been a labor of love for us and so very healing to be able to help so many children and their families. At the same time, it’s also a reminder everyday that our full-faced, always smiling, beautiful little girl, Aubrey, is no longer here with us. We also know that even though she is no longer with us, she is still touching people even in her death! We had a doctor tell us that Aubrey’s story is a story from the Bible and it needs to be told and so Jerry and I have our work cut out for us in spreading her word and we’ll be doing this forever – with a smile on our faces!!!

Thank you to all of you for your love and continuing support of the Aubrey Rose Foundation.

Love to you and your family!

Jerry, Nancy, Carly, Spencer and Saint Aubrey Hollenkamp
George and Nancy Frondorf, (Aubrey's Grandparents)

SCHOLARSHIPS

One of the programs that the Aubrey Rose Foundation does is a Scholarship Program. We give out 25 scholarships to 8th graders going on to Catholic High School education in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. These scholarships are a little unique in the fact that they are not based on academics nor athletics but rather, how good of a child the student is.

We said that Aubrey made such a difference in her 3 short years. How have you made a difference in people around you? We ask the students to write an essay and tell us what they have done. Judging these is actually the hardest thing we have to do with the Foundation. You would think that helping families would be hard… that’s a piece of cake compared to this. We wish we could give out 100 scholarships but that is just not possible at this time but could be in the future!

It’s not easy for some of these students to think along the lines of what they have actually done but we’re not looking for anything earth shattering but rather, something simple such as a student having an elderly neighbor, and the student knew it was hard for them to shovel their snow, and so the student, out of the goodness of his/hear heart, shoveled the neighbors drive without being told to do so. It’s so wonderful to see these students share with us their stories and to see how they made others feel. There are a lot of good kids out there!

These scholarships are a surprise… we present them at their graduation or awards ceremony with parents present. It is extremely important for the parents to be there because they need to see their child being rewarded for being kind-hearted! It’s also very neat to see the schools embrace our scholarship program and welcome us with open arms. We appreciate the principals and 8th grade teachers who work with us and believe in what we do. This is a voluntary program and out of 37 grade schools participating, we had 319 applications turned in.

Our new Junior Scholarship Board has their work cut out for them this year along with Jerry, Nancy, Carly, Spencer Hollenkamp and Aubrey’s Grandparents, George and Nancy Frondorf in choosing this year’s scholarship recipients. Our Junior Scholarship Board is headed up by our board member, Anthony Buford, and past scholarship recipients. Our criteria to be on this junior board are the following

The Aubrey Rose Foundation Scholarship Program recipients will receive a $500 scholarship toward their freshman year of high school. The money is nice but it’s more the honor of receiving this scholarship because once you do, you will be part of the Aubrey Rose Foundation and the legacy of Aubrey’s story.

Ronald McDonald Dinner

We held our 1st themed dinner party of 2009 on Saturday, January 31, and we had a fun group of volunteers that helped make this dinner so special! Our theme was "Blue's Brother's Party". We had Blues Brothers hats and sunglasses for all of the families as well as inflatable guitars and microphones and decorations hanging from the ceiling. The dining room looked festive in spite of half of it being closed off for renovation.

Ronald McDonald is adding an expansion wing to the existing House that will have 33 new guest bedrooms, a small kitchen and dining area, a playroom, wellness room and a fully landscaped patio. The families will be encouraged to come over to the original house for their main meals. Ronald McDonald House can accommodate 500 more families a year with this expansion.

What that means for the Aubrey Rose Foundation is that, when the new wing opens up, we will definitely need to increase our volunteers to help us prepare a delicious meal for about 300+ people, to decorate the dining area and to do crafts for the children. If you would like to join us, our next dinner is scheduled for Saturday, April 18. Our theme is "Racing at Ronnie's" and we'll have race cars throughout the dining area. We could be one of the first groups coming in to use the new kitchen facilities and we would love to have your help. It should be a racing good time!!! Please email Nancy at nancy@aubreyrose.org if you'd like to help.

RED’S OPENING DAY PARADE

The Cincinnati Reds were baseball’s first professional franchise, founded in 1869. It didn’t take very long to realize that opening day in Cincinnati was special and the Opening Day Findlay Market Parade was born.

On April 6, at 11am, Aubrey Rose Foundation will celebrate opening day with our float in the 89th edition of the Findlay Market Parade. If you are interested in being a part of the parade, and a part of our float, please email Nancy at nancy@aubreyrose.org.
